ABOUT OCTA
National organization:
The Oregon-California Trails Association, founded in 1982, is a not-for-profit organization headquartered in Independence, Missouri, dedicated to education about, preservation and enjoyment of the trans-Mississippi emigrant trails. OCTA operates a large bookstore dedicated to offering the best available titles on the emigrant experience. OCTA also publishes the scholarly Overland Journal as well as a quarterly newsletter, News from the Plains, both of which are mailed as a benefit of membership. In addition to its website, OCTA sponsors the Overland Trails Mailing List, an Internet discussion list for questions about the 19th century westward emigrant trails.
Local chapters:
OCTA has 11 regional or state chapters. The chapters work on marking and mapping the trails and work with private landowners as well as government agencies, such as the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service, on preservation issues. Local chapters also sponsor trail outings in their area, symposia and other general educational meetings. Most of these events are open to members and non-members alike. Membership in regional chapters is voluntary and in addition to membership in national OCTA. Many members join local chapters to get the best available information about issues and projects in that area. Every chapter welcomes members from all over. Most publish their own newsletters and each sets their own dues. Visit the chapter websites to get more information about what the chapter in your area is doing.
Colorado-Cherokee Trail Chapter:
OCTA reactivated the Colorado Chapter in April 2005 which was renamed the Colorado-Cherokee Trail Chapter in March 2006, to recognize the significance of the Cherokee Trail and its route through Colorado. The Chapter is now seeking to expand its membership and activities and welcomes the participation of all those interested in the historic trails and sites in Colorado.
